After months of anticipation, we’re pleased to announce the availability of our joint integration with VMware NSX.  The components of the solution include the following:

  • VM-1000-HV, Palo Alto Networks VM-Series for VMware NSX
  • Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS and Panorama 6.0
  • VMware NSX manager 6.0
  • VMware vCenter and ESXi vSphere 5.5

We now have a new VM-Series model—the VM-1000-HV-- specifically designed for the VMware NSX solution. While it can work in other modes as well (as a guest VM on VMware ESXi server, or on the Citrix SDX platform), this is the only model that fully interoperates with the VMware NSX solution. The capacities on the VM-1000-HV such as maximum number of policies and maximum number of IP addresses registered per system have been increased (relative to the other models) to support a robust software defined data center environment.

Today, the security components are available from Palo Alto Networks resellers and the VMware NSX network virtualization platform is available from VMware. To simplify procurement, beginning in 2Q 2014, you will be able to purchase the complete integrated solution as a packaged offering directly from VMware and VMware Elite NSX partners. This will hopefully make the rollout of security for your software defined data center a lot easier.

In addition, to facilitate the rollout of your deployment, the teams at VMware and Palo Alto Networks came together to create this technical whitepaper. This whitepaper provides details of the integration, along with key use cases that may be applicable for your datacenter.

Securing the software defined data center will be a big topic at our upcoming Ignite 2014 conference; register now and check out our latest agenda updates here.

Lee Klarich, Palo Alto Networks SVP Product Management, also spoke about the topic with VMware at RSA Conference this week. Here’s a look at that session.
